The first step in learning SharePoint Online is how to create a SharePoint site. First you will need to navigate to SharePoint.
Follow this link to sign up to SharePoint
Step 1
From here you should press the “Sign in” button situated at the top right of the screen, and enter your log in credentials.
Step 2
Enter your email address that has access to SharePoint in the available box, then hit next and you will be taken to an Office 365 screen. You may or may not need to enter a password to log in.
Step 3
Arriving at the Office 365 page, you should see any associated documents already linked to your account. In this case I am using an account for work, on the left of the screen you will have noticed an array of Microsoft Apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc. SharePoint is the little green icon with the S on top of it.
Click on the SharePoint icon and your SharePoint Online homepage should appear in a new tab.
Step 4
You should arrive at your organisations home site, this will look different for you but the next steps are the same. Ignore everything else on the screen besides what you will see in the top left corner, a button saying “+ Create Site”. Press this button to begin creating your own SharePoint Online site.
Step 5
When you click to create site, it will ask you which type of site you want to create. Choose the “Team Site” option.
Step 6
After choosing Team site, you will need to start entering some site details. Keep the design as a team site, enter a site name (This can be your own name, for example “John Smith Dev Site”), and add a small site description explaining what the site is for.
Once you begin to enter some details more boxes will appear. Keep the email address and site address as the auto completed names SharePoint gives you, set your privacy settings to private (you can allow wider access at a later date) or set it to public if you would like everyone in your organisation access to your site, then set your language and finally hit next.
Step 7
Your site will begin to create at this point, once it has created the finish button should appear. If you wish to grant more people access to your site enter their name or email address in the additional owners or members group.
You don’t have to do this if you want to keep the site private to you, you can also add members and owners later.
When you have either added or decided not to add additional members, press finish and you will be taken to your newly created SharePoint site.
Step 8
Your SharePoint Online site has now been created, congratulations. It will look very bland and barebones initially, don’t worry we will add to this as you go. You don’t have any lists or pages yet, so we don’t need to add anything to our home page.
You should also be aware of a few key components of this site page. Firstly the “+New” button, situated to the left of the page, this will be where you begin creating lists, pages, document libraries etc.
The next thing to take note of is the navigation column to the left side of the screen, this will be a good place to keep your lists, pages and document libraries. For now you won’t have any besides the default ones given here, but you will be prompted to add them to your navigation bar when creating them. The “Recycle Bin” is where deleted items such as word documents are stored. If you are to accidentally delete something or ever want to restore a deleted item that is the place to go.
A final area to be aware of is the “Site Contents” page. This will be where all your pages, lists and so on can be found. This is useful for finding old lists for example, you may have created a list, no longer needed it so removed it from your navigation area but would now like to find it again. This is where you can find it within the site contents.
